Rottingdean Drama Society has been going strong for over half a century, performing plays to entertain not only the people of Rottingdean but ever-widening audiences in Brighton and surrounding areas. The Society's aim is to present a balanced program each year, including great classics, costume dramas, contemporary plays, comedies and pantomimes.
“Rottingdean Drama Society must be one of the bravest groups in the county” – Jeremy Malies, Sussex Express 2007
The Society was founded in 1948 and aims to perform three plays and a pantomime each year at the Rottingdean Village Hall.
High standards are sought and, over the years, entries for the annual Brighton and Hove Arts Council Drama Competition have received ten awards including recognition of the warm and welcoming theatrical environment, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Stage Setting and three times in ten years for the Best Overall Production.
Rottingdean Drama Society is proud to present, Aladdin - a traditional pantomime, by Ben Nunan and directed by Neil Border. Performances start on 12th January 2017.
This new script follows the traditional panto story of Aladdin, set mostly in China but with travels elsewhere. It includes all the familiar elements and much more besides. Aladdin is a not very street-wise young man who falls in love with the Princess but her father, the Emperor, will never let them marry. Aladdin lives with his mother, Widow Twankey, and his brother, Wishee Washee, and works at the family laundry business. When the evil Abanazar sends Aladdin after a magic lamp, everything changes. Full of jokes - groan-inducing and great - wordplay, slapstick and songs, this is very much the traditional family panto but with plenty of pace and energy.
The Rottingdean panto is one of the biggest pantomimes in Brighton and the surrounding area. The Society prides itself on delivering a very high standard of production every year. The panto has been a near sell-out for the last few years; let's go all the way this winter.
Continuing his run of pantomimes - acting or directing - Neil Border has the privilege of bringing this brand new and wonderful script to Rottingdean. Neil aims to follow the successes of Frankenstein the panto, Beauty and the Beast, Leonardo da Panto, Dick Whittington, The Three Musketeers - Le Panteau by injecting life and excitement into this popular panto.
