The Government Inspector

A satire, by Nikolai Gobol. Directed by Graham Stapley
April 2011

Synopsis

The Government Inspector was written by Nikolai Gogol in 1836 and translated by Alistair Beaton in 2005 for The Chichester Festival Theatre. The Oxford Guide to Plays describes the work as "Although set unmistakably in provincial Russia in the early 19th century, the comedy deriving from the mistaken identity of Khlestakov and from the depiction of small town corruption has resonance wherever local officials fill themselves with self importance".
